Will Repellents Get a Columbus Squirrel Out of the Chimney?
Squirrels enjoy living in the hollows. The chimney seems something similar. Being good climbers they are easily an ideal location for squirrels to nest. Like all animals squirrels like to easily go in and out of their nests. If a pregnant squirrel is sighted nearby it is definitely trying to nest there. It is essential to get it out before the babies are born. Place a cap on the chimney with a one way door to solve the problem. The squirrel can go out but not enter again.
Repellents are used to discourage the Columbus squirrel from entering and settling in the chimney. Repellents are available as sprays, powders and liquid oils. They are mainly of two kinds i.e. natural and chemical repellents.
Natural repellents
Squirrels are terrified of predators and if they sense the presence of a predator they will relocate soon. A female Ohio squirrel will move her babies to a safe place. Predator urine is an effective natural repellent. This can be sprayed into all corners of the chimney. An exit must be made available for the squirrel to go out. The squirrel may do so immediately or after a few hours. The chimney cap must be placed after ensuring that the squirrel has gone out.
Wildlife eviction fluid is also effective. It is made of secretions and urine of male foxes.
Fox granules are powdered form of the repellent. Squirrel repellent sprays and electronic sprays can also be used.
Chemical repellents
These are available in stores. Powder and liquid repellents are available. Chimneys are small confined spaces and deterrents like ammonia and moth balls tend to remain longer.
Repellent smells are not permanent and have to be replaced regularly.
Repellents do not work if the squirrel is trapped. A trapped Columbus squirrel can be identified by its cries and scratching noises. A rope lowered in will help the squirrel to climb out.
Repellents in general do not seem to have much effect on squirrels. Repellents like ammonia and moth balls are more effective in storage areas to keep away insects.
Repellents like noise, light etc are not effective for squirrels who are already accustomed to human voices. Squirrels are also active during the day and so light is not an inhibiting factor.
Reasons why repellents don’t work
Though repellents are often used they have not produced effective results. Some of the reasons are given below.
• Repellents wear off soon and have to be regularly replaced.
• Most repellents depend on odor. A squirrel may get used to them.
• They are not effective if the Ohio squirrel is trapped.
• Mother squirrels if separated from their babies will attempt entry even if there are repellents.
• There are many spurious and fake repellents available in the market.
• Chemical repellents are harmful to humans also. They have to be stored carefully away from pets and chemicals.
• Some repellents are poisonous and may kill squirrels. This is not humane.
